I had several coworkers approach me about joining their bracket group this year. Normally I love to join in but it was a group where you buy in, and winner take all. Now, being in finance, I thankfully remembered that I am smarter than that (I pride myself on avoiding gambling). Honestly so many people are toying around with prediction markets, sports betting, etc. and I hope it doesn't come back to bite them. Have you noticed this trend as well?

😒 it’s a networking opportunity. Just buy in. Creating connections with the group may give you the visibility to get a 15% raise next year…it’s not gambling at all casino with strangers, it’s an opportunity to meet new people.

I think everybody is allowed to have their boundaries, and they shouldn’t have to cross them just for the sake of networking. Sure, you might build connections. But there will be other opportunities to network,

If you don't want to gamble, you shouldn't get involved. I'd say things like office pools are pretty harmless. What's honestly scary is how accessible gambling has become in just the past few years. There have been articles saying that a majority of young men have a sports betting account, and with the apps on their phones it can become an addiction.

Gambling in a pool is the best way to do it
No bookmaker taking a cut.
No taxes
Limited loss

If you don’t enjoy it then skip it, but for many people doing this it will be an enjoyable, positive experience.

Certainly gambling can be dangerous but there is also a responsible way to do it

I personally have an addictive personality, so I also stay away from all forms of gambling. I see different groups doing March madness brackets for money each year, and I love that for them. I just know that I need to stay away from even that.

It's ubiquitous. I can hardly watch sports anymore because I get so annoyed with all the gambling app ads being crammed down my throat. The polymarket stuff is ridiculous. Being able to bet on whether a world leader is going to be deposed or killed feels like an episode of Black Mirror come to life.

I prefer to gamble on which coworker will make the best bracket…

It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?
