I like to do DoorDash in the summer. I get to pick my own hours and I just drive around listening to music or podcasts and have minimal interaction with people (which I enjoy)
UberEats is also a good gig, and I know a person who does Favor. Sometimes she picks up groceries or drugstore items; other times it’s alcohol. The latter seems to get her the best tips. 😆
I made a plan to explore this summer. We’ve been out 7 days and I’ve been on 3 6+ mile hikes and 2 6+ mile dog walks.
Just camp back from a week long camping trip!
NY has a pretty big nanny and home organizer industry. You might be able to help a family even part-time.
Summer school has shorter hours.
There are also free virtual Professional Development opportunities either in person or online.
I’ve worked at Day Camps. It’s ideal if you have kids because most camps give discounts to counselor for their own children to attend. The camp I work at gives an 80% discount to staff.
Tutoring
Agreed! I had the BEST gig tutoring for like four years - these twins absolutely did not need it, but their mom wanted them to keep working so we met at the library for a couple hours 2 days a week. We mainly worked on reading and math. I used a couple novels and math workbooks. Then word of mouth spread and I spent my mornings in the library with kids who actually wanted to be there and I was making like $60 an hour for 3 kids each hour. The older the kid, the more money I charged - and this was 15 years ago!
What about a summer job at an art museum or a museum of any kind? Any kind of job there.
I have a side gig that helps me financially and as busy as I want. I absolutely love the products, which are also tax deductible as business expenses. Let me know if you'd like more info.
Georgia High School 1
You can tutor kiddos, or get a part time summer job at a camp, or at the Mall. Next year, if you can, sign up for summer school in your district.
I teach swim lessons at the district natatorium. I even have some of my students in my lessons.
I have been teaching in Mississippi for 22 years! I work from home during the summer. It has been a blessing since 2020. I don’t have a DM. Feel free to text me 662-837-1937.
I worked for a temp agency and had the opportunity to do many different kinds of jobs and made money.
For many years I contacted an employment agency and worked temporary assignments through them. I actually had fun working for Pathways implementing a new computer maintenance program, at a psychologist’s office, at a printing company putting together orders, driving a cherry picker pulling orders for something similar to Amazon, making pencils and markers, etc.
Same here. I do summer school for that very reason. It really helps this year since I’m moving classrooms.
Use this time to build family memories. Camping is perfect as others have suggested. Visit nearby, parks, museums, and points of interest. If you pretend to be a tourist, you can find so many things within driving distance. go berry, picking and make pies or jelly together. set a day of the week that is going to be field trip day and learn more about the area where you live.
My husband and I are both public school teachers, he is a 12 month employee though so he doesn’t get summers. We bought a house upstate and I take the kids there all summer—he comes up on the weekends. Honestly it’s cheaper than summer camp in the city and we can rent it out if we need extra income during the school year. AND the town the house is in actually has free summer camp for the kids so I still get time to do whatever I want—I could work tutoring remotely if I wanted. We only could do it because the house was VERY cheap (70,000) and you have to go much farther from the city than that since the pandemic to find a cheap place but they are out there! It took a LOT of looking to find a great place but once we did we haven’t regretted it. It’s pretty much our only vacation but it’s nice to have a vacation available whenever we want it. And in the woods we can go hiking and give the kids a different reality than their city life—and Ivan have a garden!
Enthusiast
We have a cottage on a lake. It’s been in my husband’s family forever- he’s an only child so it’s ours now. I love it for the same reasons.
