I have been out of work since late November. In that time, I've seen ONE director level position open in my area. I did not get that job. I've been hesitant to take a step back in my career, but there are only lower level HR roles available. I'm not looking forward to taking a position where I won't be in charge. How do you get used to being just another employee when you're used to being the manager?

By acknowledging that the alternative is remaining unemployed, which I'd argue is a bigger career setback than temporarily accepting a lower-level role. Swallow your ego and apply.

Best advice ever

I understand your sentiments completely. I sense your frustration. Allow me to offer my perspective on the matter. Have you thought about exploring HR roles that are typically conducted remotely or in a hybrid manner? There seems to be a discrepancy between my experience and education. Perhaps exploring various industries with an open mind could provide insight into current demands and how we can enhance our skills accordingly. Best of luck with your endeavors, and stay positive.

This is what they mean when they say it’s lonely at the top. Fewer available positions, based on how big or small your location is. I might seriously consider relocating before taking a step back. It’s not the worst thing, but it can be difficult to work out of later.

That’s a hard one to take, I don’t think anyone would want to unless you have to. It could open up new opportunities though, look on the bright side.

I am in the same boat as you. I have been unemployed for over a year. I have applied for various HR positions even if not in management. I know my qualifications and if I do not get a managing position I will work to get back to that level.

A step back in title does not have to mean a step back in influence, but the mindset shift is hard. I have seen senior leaders reframe this as a temporary platform role: contribute depth, stabilise income, and stay intentional about not getting stuck. The key is being clear with yourself about why you are doing it and what would make it time-limited.

I had a job interview for a role that I really want. The hiring manager scheduled me for an interview and did not show up. Emailed me an hour later stating that he got super busy and couldn’t attend, and would like to reschedule. This is a major red flag, but I can’t help but feel that I am missing out since this role pays 50% over what I currently make. Should I let the recruiter know? What’s your take on this?
