I have been reading a lot of articles about how companies try to structure their compensation and benefits plans. I'm considering whether to apply for a position at my local municipality, so I need to know if it makes sense.

The amount of paid holidays may differ, PTO days may differ and definitely the retirement plans are different. Setting aside the salary, which benefit would be the most important to you? I'm leaning towards the retirement plan.

I think PTO matters most to me right now because of the stage of life I'm in (young kids). But if the kids were a bit older and I wasn't juggling so much, I'd go with retirement plans too!

That makes a lot of sense. As life changes, so do the priorities!

Healthcare and retirement plan. Those are the most important. PTO is too, just to a lesser extent. Assuming the amount offered is at least reasonable. Great healthcare wouldn't offset only getting like 5-10 days off per year for me.

Since health insurance, especially for a family, can be so expensive, my must have starts there and I can figure out the rest later.

Does your firm form leadership group trainings? We usually do every summer but we are starting one these last 2 months. We usually read books or watch something and then discuss. If you do them, do you think they are effective?

Remember one thing - If some companies are laying off employees then it's equally a good chance for the other companies to get talented resource . Here things will remain balanced mostly and there's no need to fear . Not all companies do layoff at the same time. You may end up getting a 100% hike too. Just believe in yourself and focus on your skillset, time to brush up and pull up your socks. Stay safe , stay positive !

Considering leaving to take a partner position at a small firm. Is it worth it? Would only be 2 partners with a staff of 10. Comp would be 250k on the low end and probably top out around 350k. Would take 3-4 years to get to this level of comp as would be buying 10% per year up to 40% of the firm. Am I stupid for not taking this? Currently manager making 125k. Comp first year as junior partner would be 120k with 10% ownership.
