I’ve taught 3rd for 27 years. My biggest piece of advice is model, model, model. Even though they are an older grade than you are coming from, they still need this. Don’t just assign. In fact, don’t assign anything you haven’t modeled. Read Jan Richardson’s book about guided reading groups. Enjoy!
I have taught all grades and third grade is my favorite! Give plenty of time for collaborative conversations. They love to talk at that age! If you give them lots of time for talking they are more likely to be quiet and listen when you need them to! You also need to give them ample opportunity to solve problems and figure things out for themselves. They are used to having the teacher show them how to do everything and they need to start to work independently .
Do you have any favorite strategies for making sure to start the year off on the right foot? Is it more class mgmt or having work? Examples, I’m in the same boat and need help.
