We do 5 in 3rd grade, and use the four-square method for all of their paragraph writing.
I teach in WA as well. I don't recall CCSS requirements being 5 paragraphs. That must be a district requirement for you. I try and have my students up to 3 well written paragraphs by the end of the year. Many do more and some do less. I'm curious what district or at least what general area of the state you are from?
I’m in Colorado and our third graders have the same expectation of 5 paragraph essay
We are behind in Georgia I feel. I only taught my kids how to write a substantial paragraph! Only requirement on state testing!
That might be a school or district expectation. I recently taught in GA and more than one paragraph was definitely expected in 3rd grade.
I feel 3 is very doable on their own but 5 takes a lot more scaffolding. Especially for tier 2 students.
That’s a lot- we require 2, in fourth they’ll do 5
We scaffold since 1st grade, entering 3rd they should be able to write 2 good paragraphs and be on their way to 3. Some kiddos can write 5 but most get 3-4. Requirement is 3 at the end of 3rd.
My students worked on making one very strong paragraph and moved to two paragraphs. We didn’t expect more than that at my site.
California - 3rd grade standards say 1 paragraph. But really you need to have a 3 paragraph response to get the highest score on state test.
Introduction paragraph 1-2 sentence introduction. State purpose
body paragraph - details/reasons (2-3 reasons)
Conclusion - 1 sentence follow-up
