I wish my students were more chatty. I teach undergraduates now and a common issue that my colleagues and I discuss is that they don’t want to talk. Not having grown up together and having that shared history that many high school students have definitely plays a part but this behavior reflects a difference since before COVID. That said, putting students in partners, small groups, and switching between short (no more than ten-minute) lectures or videos and active learning—in other words changing the nature of the activity—frequently during class seems to hold their attention and encourage productive discussion. I consider myself a good teacher but was really taken aback recently when I came across a small group of preservice elementary teachers shopping online for wedding dresses together during my science inquiry class. The no talking at all combined with blatantly off-task behavior really got to me. So next week I opened class with, “I want to apologize because last week I under planned. It happens in teaching sometimes. Last week I noticed a lot of off-task behavior and I think it was because I didn’t plan enough to keep you engaged. Here’s our agenda for today’s class…” The wedding dress shoppers looked a little ashamed and were my most active participants that day! My classes are 2.5 hours long and meet once a week so I have time to work with—although it never seems like enough.
Do think-pair-share for your lessons to keep them engaged.
HAHAH I am right there with you OP. My students are soooo noisy and I try to be lenient because they do get their work done but dang they really never do stop talking.
