I just finished a phone screen, and the recruiter’s vibe felt really off. When she asked for my questions, I asked about the team size and she got defensive. She said she wasn't sure where I was going with that. Then I asked when compensation would be discussed, and she snapped at me and said that the focus isn't on salary right now. She went on to say that if I'm the one they want, then we'll talk about salary. Was she being rude, or am I overthinking?

Red flag for sure

Likely because she didn’t have the answers. Assuming this was a recruiter and not the hiring manager I wouldn’t let it be a deal breaker. If you are hired you will likely never interact with her again.

That sounds really weird. Honestly, that seems like a big red flag to me. If she snapped at you, there is a reason she is getting defensive.

The focus is not on salary 😂😂😂 God people are dumb

I’d say any job I’ve ever taken…95% of the decision was based on salary. But you know, that’s not the focus! 😂

Team size is a softball question. To be defensive about that is weird. I'd run from this 'opportunity'.

I've worked as part of a team of bookkeepers, and we each have our own clients assigned to us. If one bookkeeper goes on vacation, their responsibilities are split up among the other team members. Asking how many people are on the team is not an unreasonable question. I wouldn't work for a firm where I was the only bookkeeper, because a ton of work would be waiting to be processed when I returned from vacation.

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female. So it's like they automatically think the only things I would be good at writing about are fluffy little human interest stories. I'm just a reporter like everyone else. Is there some way I can tell my supervisor that yes, I do like those stories, but I like being a serious reporter even more?
