I just started at a PI firm and I love it so much. I get bonuses for clients I bring on as well. So, my question is, in what ways could I market the firm to get new clients? That’s a huge goal for me, as I’d like to be at this firm for a couple of years.

I’m glad you’re loving it! I’m moving from defense to a PI firm and like the bonus incentive as well. Just spread the word to everyone you know so they are aware that you’re doing this kind of work and will give your number out once somebody needs you.

100% why I’m switching. I do med mal defense and I never got any satisfaction out of denying compensation to someone who was disabled or lost a loved one. In contrast, I’ve done a few PI cases on the side and loved them and could see how I was helping someone or even totally changing their life. And instead of a set salary where going above and beyond really isn’t rewarded I’ll get a nice base plus a % of my recovery so they sky’s the limit. Much more motivating.

Aside from firm marketing resources, the best organic way I’ve gotten out there has been through everyday conversations where you tell folks what you do. My plumber became a client after his first time fixing something at my house. A woman I sat next to on a plane had recently been in an MVA, now she’s a client. Being extrovert about your position as a plaintiffs attorney but not pushy about trying to sign people up is a natural way to gain clients organically, so always carry your cards on you. The other aspect that has been helpful is becoming a member of local organizations outside legal groups and aim to get on the board. I like history so I’m involved with local historical societies. When you’re the only lawyer around, they bring their legal issues to you.

Market yourself, not the firm, in the ways that people have mentioned. People generally hire lawyers, not firms. In addition, treat your clients well, communicate regularly, and be empathetic to their injuries and the time it takes to go through the process. Referrals are usually the best clients.

like

Market yourself not the firm. You can lose your personal referral if they say they called for the firm rather than for you the individual.

For Plaintiff's attorneys, how big is your caseload? What kind of cases are the majority of them and are they in suit? I am currently handling 150+ mostly MVAs and premise liability cases, just about all in suit, (on top of about 10 DUIs and other small traffic matters) and I feel like I'm drowning and looking to jump ship. What is normal/to be expected? In NYC area if that matters

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

Hello all, I'm a very green attorney, never tried a single case or even was second or third chair, but managed to land a litigation associate position at a Plaintiff's firm. Does anyone remember their first trial? How did you feel and how did it turn out by comparison? Anything you wish you did differently?
I know in THEORY what the process of trials are but thanks to COVID I haven't been able to observe them in real life so I'm very nervous for the day I finally enter a courtroom.

I'm a 6th year attorney in NYC. Strictly defense work; started out with the City Law Dept, did a year and a half of med mal/construction, and for past year and a half have been at a well known defense firm working on high exposure construction accident cases. Contemplating taking a couple interviews at plaintiff's firms to see if there is a good fit. Does anyone have any advice on how approach discussions about compensation and what a market level comp package would or should look like?
