Thank you for your kind words. I stay near Pyramid Valley, Harohalli, which is quite far from the office. I understand where the perception of being underpaid comes from, so adding some context.
I will be completing 10 years at Bosch soon. I had planned to move out before COVID, but my father was diagnosed with cancer, and I chose to stay back. During that period, my focus was understandably elsewhere. Later, I had two children, and my career progression took a backseat.
While I may not have had an aggressive or fast-tracked career, I am a highly focused, attentive, and proactive professional. I started my career with a salary of ₹16,000. When I joined Bosch, I was offered a compensation of ₹8 lakhs, which I accepted.
I have never actively negotiated or demanded hikes..it’s not something I’m comfortable with, as it feels like asking or begging. Over time, I’ve realized (through feedback from colleagues) that those who actively ask tend to receive better increments.
In terms of qualifications, I hold a BSc degree and a Diploma. I come from a primarily operations-focused background, so I don’t have “fancy” or niche technical skills to showcase, but I bring consistency, ownership, and reliability to my work.
I know it sounds unreal, but that’s honestly how it was. I didn’t have a team doing the same work as me. Yes, we were part of a team, but everyone handled completely different topics and worked independently. There was no overlap or dependency, each person owned their own topics aligned with Germany.
Find companies near your home and look for roles there. Fully remote roles are slowly being phased out by most companies.
If you have health issues, you should also check whether you have enough physical activities in your life. If your commute is too long for the days you go to the office, then what about the other 3 days that you don't go to the office? Do you have better energy on those days? Or is it the same? You can start changing your life slowly by adding exercise on those days and you might find yourself having more energy even on the days you do commute to office.
And, talk to your husband. Find his opinion on it.
You can also consider changing to a 75% role in the meanwhile.
Plus, talk to your manager about your salary, you're underpaid.
How long is your commute? Any chance of using a "hybrid" commute and to add a faster metro transit in between?
You are severely underpaid. I would suggest that you should look for a job near your home location. Also keep learning and start giving interviews.
I also seem not to ask for hikes but I realised that with the same work , skill sets and experience the payment is very different among peers who actively ask or negotiate for hikes. So I switch companies if my efforts are not being recognised without bootlicking. I hope to find a company where I don't have to think about those things and focus on pure work. It is tough to manage everything along with kids and everything you have gone through. Bosch policies are good in terms of work like balance.
If you believe that you are undervalued and your skills are not utilised properly then start preparing for interviews and start applying.it will take some time but you will eventually find what you want.
All the best.
Why don’t you take a 1 year sabbatical and see how you feel regarding it . Meanwhile in that 1 year break try upskilling and using the time productively . If you get another job in the sabbatical period you can immediately leave from here without notice period
…..with thyroid issues and weight gain, which adds to the fatigue. I’ve been actively looking for remote roles, but haven’t had success yet. If I do find one, I’m genuinely open to taking a pay cut for better health and balance.
I’m feeling stuck and unsure what my next step should be, so I’m looking for kind, practical input. Please don’t laugh this off. I know I could ask GPT, but human perspectives would really help.
Some context:
Savings around ₹70L across cash, MF, SIPs, NPS, and PPF
Gold worth around ₹30L
My husband owns our home and car with no loans and is currently working
My salary is under ₹20L and my family doesn’t strictly depend on my income
Given this, would it make sense to take a career break or step away for a while, or are there better options I should consider before making that decision?
I’d really appreciate your thoughts.
