Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I always say "one million dollars", because that's what Dr Evil wanted in the Austin Powers movie (and maybe that's why I am still unemployed - ha).
What exactly did you say, I am not sure what a soft answer is? However, that is very interesting. I have found a lot of companies say they don't negotiate but in the end they always do. If they want you bad enough they will negotiate.
You can absolutely negotiate as long as you haven't accepted the offer. A lot of HR people expected, actually. If they try to hold you to your original number, you can say you just did some market research.
I always usually go over my usual ask when that happens. Like $1500-$3k over.
But well above the market salary. That's for sure.
Always have an answer like that prepared for next time.
Contingencies are always a must.
