I’m in the National Guard, currently deployed. Will have 17 years total service at the end of it.
I’m enlisted and the promotions have been slow for a number of reasons. I’m far from what I would call a respectable rank and will likely get one promotion before retirement at year 20.
Ive been approached on this deployment about a direct commission. Early in my career I would have been thrilled receive the opportunity to retire as an officer but it would require that I serve an additional 10 years in that capacity
It will likely double my retirement pay but I’m not sure I care as I’m very close to the two comma club now and I expect it to climb for the next two decades when I plan to call it quits.
Am I a fool for staying a mid level NCO vs being an officer?
If you care about your retirement check then that's one thing. If you like what you do then it's another. I would think of this all through the lens of opportunity cost. What are you passing up and turning down in terms of life experiences if you just do your 20 and walk? Same question for if you get your butter bars.
