I realized a bit late, in my journey, that being a successful Product Manager means being a jack of all trades.
You should know the full lifecycle — from idea to launch — well enough that if you were the only one on the team, you could still build and ship the product.
Not a master of everything, but good enough at design, testing, development, and launch — while nailing your core PM role.
What’s that one skill you think separates a good PM from a great one?

I think actively zooming out both professionally and personally helped me go from a Product Manager to a Product Leader.

- Willingness to roll up your sleeves to help the team achieve the end objective.
- Know your customers
- USE the product. You will be surprised how many PMs I know who do not use the very product they are building.

That is true. Some Pm's do not know how their product actually works in real time.

Yes Agree , PM needs to know something of everything . Lately trends have shifted having on tech people being in product roles which I think is counter intuitive to the premise . My thought is if you have not talked to clients you should not be a product manager

Having a support background/interest in connecting. I interact with customers really well and I’ve heard that some PM’s shy away from customer interviews. I enjoy them and get such valuable insight.

The best PMs focus on the what and why. They leave the how to the dev teams.

Finally made the career shift into tech product management (originally in consulting). It’s been exactly a month of being in the role, but any advices on how to spend the next 60, 90 days+ ahead?

So far I’ve been focused on understanding product, getting to know the team, contributing to project management areas where I’m more used to. Thanks!

I’m trying to pivot to PM after >3 years in finance and I have a 2nd round interview with CPO this week. Company has 3.7 on Glassdoor with complaints about CEO, “bro-y” culture, and hard to wfh. It’s a data analytics company with 5 PMs, was bought by a PE firm this year, and has a new (female) CEO as of Oct. Role is 50/50 hybrid, pays well vs what I make, and most importantly would be a foot in the door to PM. Is this a good place to be for PM? What else do I need to find out to know for sure?
