You will learn a lot as you are on the job. It’s a learning curve. But by month 2 you should know your judge’s preferences and how chambers run, and from there, do your very best.
Read some of the written opinions or orders from your judge before you start to understand their writing style. Sit in on hearings if possible. And speak with current clerks before you start to learn any particular quirks or preferences of your judge. Otherwise, a lot of it you learn as you go!
The good lawyers make it easy for you. Don’t worry about not knowing x area of the law. The lawyers will brief that area of the law and you’ll check and read the cases. Feel free to dm me! You got this

Depends on your background. I didn’t do anything related to criminal law in school and felt a bit overwhelmed in that area, wouldve helped to read up on background materials about how criminal sentencing and related issues work. But only if you have extra time. Reading your judge’s more significant opinions (especially any that were overturned) may also give you insight into their thought processes.
