I received feedback from a peer that I need more management experience, but my team all thinks I'm a great manager. How do I understand the disconnect?

“Thanks for the (vague and unhelpful) feedback. What are some things you would do differently?

What are some examples/specific skills you think I can build upon?

It sounds like your peer needs more experience giving good and actionable feedback.

Can you ask your peer for specifics and context?

like

Well, there is a question what your team thinks. And there is a question of how good your team is from the outsider point of view.
Also, I’ve never met a team telling their boss that they sucked.
You might do an anonymous 360 review

I’m not sure what it means. But you need to decide if you want to take any feedback now or not, cause you seem defensive. And that’s ok. Feedback is a gift, but some gifts are meant to be returned to the store

Great managers know there is always room for improvement

Honestly all of this is very vague. I would certainly do what others have suggested, but I also will say being called a great manager by your team is unclear. How was this feedback given? Was it individually asked or in a group setting? What do they value from your leadership?
There's a lot to potentially dig into here to understand:
1) what each of them value that you are doing
2) how the company /other teams perceive your team
3) I would also reflect on what you think you are bringing to your team so you can compare against what all of these team members say.

I'd be sure to come at all of this from a place of curiosity. We all have room for improvement.

Sounds like your peer is the one that needs experience. How do you provide feedback without being specific?

likesmart

Do you trust and respect the peer? Was this bright to you in the spirit of helpfulness?
Everyone can always improve. It's silly to think your direct reports think you're great so you're done learning.
But also... It's difficult to give a manager honest feedback. Maybe give them an anonymous way to provide feedback. There are management assessments you can use as well

Hi!
This is what I´d do:
request for a clear(er) and (more) specific feedback both from your Manager and your Team:
What’s working & why? What’s not working & why? What suggestions might they have?

(e.g. if your Team thinks you´re a great Manager - what specially makes them think that? Can they use some examples?)

More info you have, more effectively will you be able to use that info.

I would also think about my personal opinions in terms of the skills & knowledge I might be lacking and what I want to focus on to improve.
What additional skills & knowledge would help you do even a better job? What skills & knowledge will best serve you when thinking about your long-term plans & goals?

All the best :)

Btw, if you wish to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI. I´m a Career Coach, happy to offer some additional insights.

My GF thinks I am a jerk but my Mom thinks I am great! Who is right? Ask your peer what perspective they have on why or what area you need improvement and never fear peer criticism — it is super helpful sometimes and you benefit from being open to criticism.

More management experience for what?

I believe that the paper who related the message should elaborate a bit more.

You should also seek the advice of other colleagues and persons in a more senior position. Once they share the same view, then you can now consider ways in which you can improve/ enhance your management skills.

Your team may just tell you what you want to hear

I am curious how other inclusion teachers are being utilized when the school is doing remote learning. I find that I am sitting in the zoom class and have very little opportunity to contribute. I am having discussions with my teachers on ways that I can better support them and the students when remote.
