By quitting. In all seriousness, we have one life and free will. Get an emergency fund in place, think about what you want to do with your life, and go do it. Be smart, but don’t wake up ten, twenty, plus years from now and regret how you lived your life.
I’ve been thinking about doing this more and more. Especially after realizing the majority of women I know or have listened to via self help journeys seem to be happier once they land on their feet after letting go of the high stress/no balance job. If I died tomorrow, people would be depressed for me realizing I was just grinding every week to just survive.
I am not a lawyer but I know a few people who have their JD but don't "practice." In general, there are a lot of legal adjacent fields. Pretty much everything we do has a legal aspect, so with the right perspective, you could do anything. It could also just be the area of law that you hate. If you are sure you want to leave the field, look at the non-attorney professionals you deal with on a daily basis. Could your experience parlay into a job in that field? Could you be unhappy with WHERE you are, not the firm, but the state, city, or area? It sounds old fashioned but make a pros/cons sheet for your life. What in your life make you happy, what doesn't? Practically, you have to find somewhere that you make enough to pay the bills (including that law school loan), so take all factors of your life into consideration. Maybe moving from a big city to a small town would be less pressure. Maybe moving from rural Iowa to the Chicago metropolitan area would give you better opportunities to make a better wage. Lots of things to consider
Try compliance- the legal skills translate and the work overlaps because its rules and regulations basically. Don’t quit without a job even if you have an emergency fund. The job market is tight right now and is very unforgiving. Stay put and reframe, “I am here to increase my skills and position myself for my next opportunity. I have income where many do not and I am grateful, this is not the end but rather a means to achieve my next goal.”
