I started in retail asking where everything went. Now I’m the one everyone asks. No promotion speech, no dramatic turning point, just showing up, learning fast, and stepping in when it counted. Somewhere between the long shifts and tough days, the job stopped feeling like “just work” and started feeling like a career.

When did you notice you were growing, not just working?
Did the industry shape you, or did you shape your path within it?

I was growing when I was recognized and promoted for what I thought was “doing my job”. I had taken on more responsibility out of sheer determination to learn more and grow. I shaped my own path, it was uniquely my own, at my own pace

That’s powerful. It shows that consistent effort and taking initiative often speak louder than titles or formal recognition. Your path really reflects intentional growth.

That moment usually comes when people stop asking where things are and start asking how you think. Growth isn’t a title change, it’s when your judgment becomes trusted. Most careers don’t have a dramatic pivot, they have a quiet shift like this.

Exactly. It’s that quiet shift that really shows your impact, when your insight starts guiding decisions rather than just following directions.

So I used to work for a company where my job was good, was a director of business solutions for a fashion brand. Only issue was that the CFO micromanaged and ended up leaving. My background is digital transformation however I took an infrastructure position to rebuild a provincial healthcare system. I always lacked the hardware side and thought this was a good move but I feel like I’m losing my digital skills and don’t enjoy the work. I’m in it for 7 months now.
