We use our NWEA Map scores to determine who we should test. If they score close to 90% then we test them.
In our district we use the MAP scores for k-2 along with teacher recommendation. The CoGat is used in 3 thru 5 after looking at MAP scores and teacher input.
I’m a gifted coordinator. We always give the test to ALL 2nd graders. We don’t test again in later years. The score doesn’t fluctuate much over time. By testing all, you have the chance to catch twice exceptional students.
Finally, it’s a good idea to remind teacher friends that even in a gifted program, there will always be a wide range of abilities. The 99th percentile shows itself in different ways. Our job is to tap into each student’s strengths, use them to their benefit, and get out of the way!
Thank you!
We use the CogAT with all students in 1st and 4th grades as one part of our screening and identification process.
I teach 6th grade gifted. I honestly think kids should be tested in 3rd grade. I get so many student every year that aren’t gifted at all and really struggle in my class. I think that some just plateau after a while if they are tested too early!
Thanks for your feedback!!
We test all with the screener at 2 and 4. We only test those above 70th percentile on NWEA in Kdg to save $$. (I wish we tested 50th percentile and up.)
