In our county in Ga, the elementary schools use the resource model, where gifted students are pulled out all day, once per week for enrichment. I teach critical thinking, foreign language, we do research projects STEM, and PBL’s, and learn to play Chess. We also compete in as many competitions as we can find. Our Quiz Bowl team just placed 4th at the National Jr. Beta Club Convention! These students are also served the other four days by their regular classroom teacher through differentiated assignments.
Our district has two schools with self contained GATE classes at all elementary levels. Some students leave their home school to go to these. If they stay, we hold a meeting after school once a month for them (more like a club). It usually begins with a "challenge" activity given at the end of the preceding meeting. Then we do an activity together or have a guest speaker. We have them a new "challenge" at the end. The challenges are not mandatory, but most students participated. Many of these activities were STEM challenges.
We use an acceleration model. We have pull out and self contained classrooms (depending on the school and their numbers) that instruct 1-2 grade levels ahead in math and ELA
Pull-out format, with compacting and acceleration as appropriate.
It’s a joke! Gen Ed teacher is punished to service the GT students. Extra monthly meetings, paperwork, 6 hr GT PD update over the summer and no additional compensation or resources. Public school is a disservice to true gifted students! In my district, they over label and most are just high achievers. It’s a way for parents to brag at social gatherings.
