I've advanced the quickest by job hopping personally. From experience looking around it's always going to folks with visibility nearly every single time, ability matters so much less. Outside of that I've seen the folks that are just absolute rock stars getting taken advantage of for all the time they put in advance, but it's never been as fast as the people who just have good visibility and charisma with the people who make these decisions.

Yes, it is so true unfortunately
Good managers. All a manager has to do to wreck your career is discredit you or ignore your good results. There are not many good managers.

So true as well... luxury item to have for sure
Luck, networking, charisma, and bootlicking all matter more. I saw some rock stars on our team get turned down promotions this year because they didn't use AI enough. Conversely, yesmen who make a habbit of arguing with anyone under them and agreeing with anyone above them rise quickly.

Yep
Sadly it doesn’t. It depends on your manager and them advocating for you. I made this mistake and ended up burning out. People who do get promoted do the least amount of work or just stick to their job description and don’t do extra. They focus on making themselves as visible to the right people as possible. It is best to see a job as just that - a job that pays the bills and find your passion elsewhere.

Hahaha yeah. I have learned to be content and see it as that instead of pouring all into it just to get burnt out
Optics and positive alignment with manager matters much more than ability. As long as you do what your manager tells you and make them look good, you get promoted. Those who need to deliver bad news, good luck.

What has mattered most is being able to play the political game

Yes, that game is so important
Know when to change companies, a single negative opinion of someone above you can hold you back.
Cultivate your image in the eyes of key opinion holders and decision makers and establish yourself in a positive and agreeable light.
If anything sours, move early before anything turns toxic. Be prepared to move as soon as it looks like the job has no prospects.
You'll still need to perform well, but you also need to be noticed and seen.

This is so true. A negative view by someone above is pretty much the new of your career there.
