I want a puppy, but I am not sure I am ready for the dog. Does that make sense?

Puppies become dogs 100% of the time.

I actually experienced that a few years ago. Dog we rescued was pregnant and every puppy but one died. So so sad

Don’t get a puppy

like

It makes sense, and means you should not get a puppy. But, you could try to foster puppies and dogs in your area! That way you get them for a couple weeks at a time only.

like

Honestly if you have to question you are not ready. We knew we were ready and we still didn’t expect over a year of potty training and 500+ $$ a month in walks and puppy sitting. But we do love her

If you aren’t ready for a dog then you definitely aren’t ready for a puppy

Foster a dog, and not just a puppy, because eventually that puppy will grow up to be an adult/senior dog. Know what you’re getting yourself into, dogs require attention, training, toys, physical exercise, veterinary care, and they have their downsides (shed, chew on your personal belongings, occasionally have accidents, you need to arrange for someone to watch them if you’re out of town). To me personally it is worth it, but you need to know what you’re getting yourself into.

So many people are getting dogs right now. Obviously your call but please think about when things go back to normal if you are good to go home after work instead of happy hour to walk the dog, how often you travel for work or pleasure, and your support system should you need it.

like

Please, just don't be one of those owners who keep their dogs in cages half the day. Give the pup the life it deserves is all I ask.

I'm not a dog owner but my understanding is having a puppy is way more work than having a grown up dog

like

They all require a lot of work, especially a newly weaned pup who might keep you up at night. They bark, dig, chew etc. I have 3 dogs, which is more than I intended, but LOVE them. If you think you are not ready, wait.

Best decision ever. Especially now. You have the time. And they bring happiness. Just go for it.

It makes sense! But the puppy will bring you so much joy!

I got a rescue who was about 8 months. Best decision I ever made. None of the puppy growing pains, but still plenty of playful puppy energy. He is almost 3 now and definitely a velcro dog.

I’ve had 2 rescues - both from shelters. Young adults. Both were 100-% house broken and semi-trained. Neither got into stuff. I could instantly tell their personality because there were adults and I knew within minutes what they were like.

First was 2.5 and lived to almost 17.

Current one is 3 and I’ve had him for a year.

Hi I got a puppy WHEN the shelter in place just happened. FROM my experience, I am glad I did it while in quarantine but holy shit is it a lot to handle. Pees and poops middle of the night so you have to get up once at least which disrupts your sleep. Chews on everything and requires a lot of attention. I’m very tired and it is distracting during work hours. BUTTTT I love him and he’s hella cute. Hopefully this quarantine period allows me to spend time and train him faster and he’ll be a good dog SOON (evolution). He’s almost potty trained!

I fostered during my third year of law school because I had lots of time on my hands - absolutely fell in love and adopted her. Best decision of my life! But don’t adopt until you’re 100% sure you can make a 10-20 year commitment!

One and done

My dog was diagnosed with cancer today. He’s only 8. Getting a dog is kind of like adopting a terminally ill child.

Sorry for the downer, but your puppy will grow up and will die and you will have to deal with that hurt.

I’m so sorry to hear this :( hoping your pup is able to be treated, and if not, is comfortable and happy.

I’ve been trying to adopt a dog since before quarantine and it has been incredibly hard. All of the shelters by me are cleared out and highly selective of what families get dogs right now. I lost my pup last year to cancer. This time has been really rough to be alone
