I was laid off the day I had final interview for a new job. The recruiter reached our immediate rely after the interview to discuss my comp expectations. I a shared my current details including what bonus I recieved in past. I am speaking with recruiter again on comp. How should I handle the layoff situation. Should I be upfront given that they will find out when the emplyment checks are done. How should negotiate the comp and joining bonus etc on this call given the layoff situation.

Are you still on paid notice? If so, you’re technically an employee.

Personally, I don’t know I’d broach it until the conversation is done. The recruiter I think will still be in your corner, but if you don’t mention anything and get the new job - it really doesn’t matter.

My advice is to wait and see what happens. If you don’t get this job, tell the recruiter what’s going on. And if you do get the job, tell the recruiter after all the papers are signed.

You need to look after yourself and in business companies look after their own interests first. I’d negotiate as normal and don’t post anything on linkedin, negotiate as if you’re still employed. You want the strongest position possible while negotiating.

Good luck, you got this!

This is the right answer ^
Don’t introduce unnecessary complication where you don’t need to and you’re not doing anything illegal here. If you were interviewing 2 months after the layoff and lied about it - that would be a different story. But this is a totally different situation. Nail this new job down quick. If this had to happen to you - this could have been the best timing for it tbh. Just breathe. You’ll be fine :)

Do NOT tell them, just accept and keep it pushing.

No need to bring it up, sounds like you are close to landing this anyway

Many years ago, I was told by my immediate supervisor that I was likely to be let go, and at that point I had interviewed and was a leading candidate for another position. I did not mention anything to the new employer, and by the time I was to speak to upper management, (likely to be let go during the meeting), I had the new position. At that meeting I informed upper management that I was resigning for the new position. I was never laid off or fired since I was leaving anyway. I agree with the others, you are still employed at that point and there is no need to tell the new employer about the pending layoff.

like

I wouldn't say anything about being laid off, since you just said the background check will let your new employer know about it anyway and ask for what you think they'll give you +30% for negotiating wiggle room. Make your moves from a position of Power as they dont know who you are. So show them

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.

Thoughts? Should I go higher? I do my job well that’s why they decided to keep me as a contractor after my internship.
