I have definitely been in that situation before and blurted out my previous salary, too. It's all learning and growing, so don't stress it. I wouldn't go back and negotiate for more at this point but just learn from it and move on. I usually give a number HIGHER than what I was actually making. A number I would be happy receiving.
No, they should ABSOLUTELY be pushing for a higher number. If they were given an offer, then the ball's in their court. Because if they're smart, they know that if they pay too little and they find a job that pays better, they'll leave for that, requiring them to go through the time-consuming and expensive hiring process all over again.
This is their last chance to get their pay up, so don't blow it!
