This is an old thread but I am wondering how you are all managing.
I am worried about my performance as I look to enter the profession. My memory isn’t what it used to be. I applied to law school thinking I would be a litigator (significant experience pre-law school that exposed me to it), but now I worry about needing to quickly recall something
Check your vitamin d levels, blood pressure level and sugar levels. These are the biggest silent culprits in high stressful jobs for minorities and could be contributing factors other than depression
Can you take some time off from work? Your mental health is super important!
I second Attorney 1’s sentiment. If you have a spouse let them know you need to take a little break and adjust the budget accordingly. If no spouse adjust your budget now. You have to take care of yourself because no one else will. Better to take a break than it get worse/debilitating. If you absolutely can’t then try some aggressive therapy this profession will burn you from both ends.
Had this due to post pregnancy hormones. It was the worst and had upper associates ask me why I wrote X or why I didn’t catch Y in the document. Didn’t matter how much I tried. I just gave myself grace and tried to roll through the best I can. Not like I can say “well I missed that because of my monthly hormones.”
I felt like this a year ago .. I took a few months off and rested. Now I’m back on my A game.. sometimes if you don’t ask you won’t get.. if you are an asset to the team they should try to work with you and find a solutions .. my firm did not sure if others would
Maybe you don’t have to tell them full details. Maybe you can ask for some time off because your productivity is faltering… when’s the last time you took some time off to do nothing but relax?
Speak with a doctor first and make sure it isn't something serious you aren't aware of. Firms have to provide reasonable accommodations for disabilities, so even if you don't know what the cause is but can get something official in writing stating you have a disability that requires more time to complete tasks, that may help. A reasonable accommodation may just mean they write off a portion of your time before billing the client without dinging you for it.
I would take a brief leave (a few weeks) to figure out what's going on. Take that time to meet with your internist and a therapist. You don't have to provide details other than you are coping with a medical issue. If you need additional time, your doctor's can provide you with the documentation for an extended leave of absence. I know this is not always the case but your past performance should be more than enough to keep you in the good graces of partners at your firm. If this is not the case, you should move to a firm/company that values you.
