You avoid working with that partner or if you can’t, you find a new firm and leave
I remember as a young associate making a mistake on a partner's case and then hearing the partner tell the client that she made the mistake without mentioning me. She had my undying loyalty in that moment. (Also it wasn't an isolated moment. That is the culture.)
Not a mistake but the equity partner I still work for used to say on client calls when something was on his desk for review and I have been doing that for the associates who work for me as well. Makes them feel better and I found it makes them feel more responsible for their own deadlines.
Unfairness like OP’s partner makes my blood boil.
Yup it won’t be the first or last time. Let them dig their own grave, which will happen, it’s just a matter of time
You leave and find a way to tell the client and court who was responsible for the missed deadlines ;)
But seriously, repeat offenders like this partner don’t get away with this kind of behavior for too long. As the manager of the matter, ultimately they are responsible for all missed deadlines, not their underlings.
I quit for a clerkship
If I were a client and a partner tried to pass blame for something to an associate I would fire the law firm on the spot
This. Clients hire the partner, not the associate. It also makes the partner look like a bad manager, so they’re not even saving much face.
When I was only associate on call and that happened I contradicted the partner to the client and indicated I wasn’t involved at that stage. Hurt my relationship with partner, but I ain’t taking blame for things I don’t do. And I called the partner out on a call after. I regret burning bridges, but I still have succeeded at the firm. People like that are clowns and deserve to be made to look as such.
I had a partner who was notorious for throwing associates under the bus at every turn
Try being a paralegal….. almost weekly this happens
