Gonna call bogie on your forecast for a recession! In general in the US & depending where you’re located PE & CM jobs are extremely “safe”. Land development is insane right now nationwide. Supply has been struggling with demand since COVID. Engineers don’t stay unemployed long - at least in the state I’m in.
One year later ... economy is looking good luckily ...
Ya it’s high demand for PEs and PMs right now. Construction is always going on. I landed my first GC job in project management during Covid and have been steadily employed since. Even more than doubled my income from 2022 to now. It’s a great industry to stick with. And civil and industrial are where the higher income sits.
Have you considered working for Walmart ? They have a construction real estate department and their jobs pay competitively! You should check them out in LinkedIn, reach out to a recruiter and see if they can help.
And to answer your question, yes, it’s a very stable and competitive job to be a CM or PM.
Private GCs are dependent on their client base. Your company likely messages that their backlog is strong. It’s hard to tell from an entry level position. You can ask things like, “is there some scopes I should be assisting on so I’m ready for the next job”. 1) it makes you look good in that you’re trying to progress your skills. 2) if they don’t have an answer, you may want to start looking. Companies are not very transparent and they don’t want to loose someone toward the end of a job, but they also won’t tell you that you’ll be laid off at the end of it. Also, my friends at private GCs have told me management gets really bent out of shape when someone leaves. They are childish about it. Prepare yourself for that and also be careful who you discuss leaving with.
