I would like some helpful and constructive advice for those wanting to switch to UX/UI field but have nowhere to start, a full time job, and cannot afford an entire degree.

Have a Sociology degree/ Comm minor, I have a webpage for my photography business, have extensive process improvement, workflow building, design experience.

I’m also concerned about how AI could affect jobs and wondering how relevant that is.

Many thanks.

(Pls don’t be snarky, we are all struggling out here.)

Bootcamps may be an affordable option. You don’t need a degree, but you could be overlooked without any training and certification. Before you invest, try some YouTube tutorials. Follow some bloggers who can give you an idea on how AI is affecting the workplace.

Does anyone have any good resources for auditing ESG?

My wife and I are moving to Boston from overseas (we’re from Italy and we’ve recently won the diversity visa green card lottery).

We are looking to rent a 1BR starting in January, ideally for ~$3k/month. I’ll be working in the downtown area.

Do you recommend we go for a serviced/luxury apartment (e.g. Montaje, 345 Harrison, etc.) or hire a broker to get a “normal” apartment?

Any managed buildings recommendations within our budget? Also, what are some good brokers we could work with?

Thanks!

Looking for anyone who works at Rivian! Just applied for my dream job and I would love to chat with anyone someone who works there currently! Thank you in advance!

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.

Interested in UX but have no experience or much knowledge about it. What kind of roles were you in before you got into UX, how did you get there, did you have to get a certification, and what does your day to day work consist of? Is it more technical, psychological or design based?

My product owner doesn’t understand the value of standard practices like information architecture, use personas, and just want to get to wireframes as soon as possible. Even after a few of us demonstrating that value and the founder chiming in to agree with us. How have you all combatted this before?

like

I think I may have finally had it.

A couple of decades in this field and now I want to just walk away. The grind in tech is soul-destroying, and the vast majority of the time, coworkers outside of UX have no idea what it is, what it’s for, and how it’s applied. I’m at my wits end and the constant problem is a kind of “willful misunderstanding” of our process and value.

After wasting too many years on design immature companies, It’s senselessly depressing. I’ve given away too much of myself.
