From a personal, rather than organisational standpoint, I used to feel threatened by others like me because I thought being different made me special and having more people like me around me was competition because there can only be one. It took some reflection and reading to first become aware of this mindset and then to change it. I now actively try to help and show solidarity with those who come from a similar minority background, especially if they are just starting out & I try to focus on everything else that gives me uniqueness and that is not tied to my ethnicity/background.
Wow, that is searingly honest - thank you for sharing that. I feel we could have a long conversation about that point specifically as I went through the exact same thing. But it took me long time to get there. I am toying with the idea of setting up a people of colour group at my agency. I mean, it would be a pretty small group but it might foster a sense of community. Do you do anything like that for any non-majority group?
Op, go for it, I used to work in an Insight agency where we organised a BAME group, what worked was having an agenda for the meetings and thinking of constructive structural changes we would suggest to management, challenge not to let it turn into a space to vent, which while important kind of doesn't lead anywhere...
