There is so much more I’d want to know. Gaslighting? That’s a stretch. But there is certainly a reason the GCD doesn’t trust that you’ll execute it as well as the other person. The fact is, the idea is just a part of it and the GCD has to decide who is right for each stage of the project. I can see why you’d be upset, but I’d ask the GCD more questions, and be open to hearing feedback you may not like.
It seems quite odd - so I would push for better feedback from your GCD or go talk to the CCO.
Ahhh the old ‘art director goes on production’ gambit. I’d be pissed too, especially since half the ADs I’ve worked with get lost in granular lighting details on set—completely ignoring pacing, story, and line reads that the writer usually came up with and knows best. In my experience, CDs that think like that are very much stuck in their ways. But I’d try to make an argument about the value you bring. Also for the record it’s definitely not ‘gaslighting’ just an archaic way of managing production
Always best to send both art and copy imo. What’s the excuse? Not enough money? Team too small and need someone to oversee home base? All bullshit. Update your book, have an honest conversation about why your not happy with things then start looking if they blow smoke
I’d add on if there’s a budgetary reason for not including you, ask if they can have you dial in to video village and watch. It sucks but it’s a way to still be involved and shoot down a lame excuse.
Experienced this exact thing very recently. Unsure of your situation but I know mine is because the ACD is a fun bro (like my GCD) and I am unfortunately a woman.
Maybe! But it is pervasive in this industry so likely not. Happy to commiserate/name names in the DMs.
I can see why you’re upset. It’s bizarre that they wouldn’t include you on the production part even if they needed to bring in an art focus. Curious if it’s budgetary? However, unless it’s a dialogue heavy spot, this is where art directors shine and most copywriters on set pay attention to performance while ADs do that and cover majority of the on the production needs. (That’s not to say your opinion doesn’t matter, that’s not the case, more so that this is where their skills are best put to use).
Chat with the AD - make sure they know your vision. Don’t be afraid to hear them out on things. It’ll show your GCD you’re collaborative and mature enough to trust the process even when you have to let your grip loose on something you’ve been super close to.
Hopefully you can jump right back in in post!
