Anyone who has been in PA >15 years - I need your tips. I'm in15 years and am exhausted from the sales pressure and travel. No interest in making partner. What keeps you going?

Flexibility, being able to make my own schedule for the most part and go to my kids events. And then there is the uncertainty of what to do next, the difficulty of finding time to look for a new job properly, and the fact that I have been in it almost 20 years and it's all I have known for a long time. If I'm being honest, I would love to leave, I'm a little scared to take that leap, but I'm working on it 😐

Partners and new flex plan that works. In addition finally realizing after 20 plus years in public life is short, family is everything and we do not save lives in PA. . Turn off the emails at dinner and night and really not everything is urgent especially internal items even though others think it is.

Consider the non-partner options. E.g., Executive Director. And if you are more comfortable in the "doing the work" role vs. "selling the work" you can make a business case for promotion to ED as a "subject matter professional" rather than a "tax account leader." Not clear whether you have expertise in a particular niche area but if you do, that could be your ticket to ED (essentially a highly compensated senior manager with executive level responsibilities but not as much pressure on the sell side). Also, and this is something I learned too late (after my promotion went through), you should reach out to any National Tax partners you have worked with to see whether there might be openings in their group. They don't have sales targets. In my case, I was surprised when I was promoted and a National partner reached out to me to ask why I "settled" for local office ED when I might have been able to make a push for National office Partner. :-)

Honestly, I left PA when I got to that point. I hated the sales pressure and all of the focus on revenue. I just wanted to do the work, not sell it! I knew I didn’t want to be partner so I went to industry and am so so so much happier.

I’ve been over 10 years so far, not interested in making partner either. Slowly looking around but flexibility keeps me put for now

What keeps me going? The fact that I can’t find another job after a good amount of time trying. Immensely frustrating.

Bakery Tilly 1 - you can (and likely will) continue doing sales even in a firm director role. BT isn’t going to turn down someone that has an interest in that area from doing it

Consider switching firms for a new perspective. Meeting new people makes it fresh again and you’ll probably get a healthy raise.

Come to deloitte and be a specialist leader

It’s for people just like you. The pay is good

Come to Crowe - be a director. :)

Sincerely appreciate all the insights - thank you! D1, that's what I'm afraid of - that I've spent too long in PA, and I'll be seen as overqualified for certain positions and others may not be able to pay my salary. I may need to take a cut. D3, tell me more about the specialist leader position.

CH1 - Directors don't sell or travel?

OP - you totally hit the nail on the head! I definitely stayed too long, but the flexibility was key while my kids were little....

Interested in Firm Director. Just makes more sense for me than partner But I actually like the sales aspect.

Managing director not a bad gig. Have been at it 25+ years Pay is good (way more than most industry jobs) and there is a lot to be said for flexibility and the job security if you are a solid performer. See if you can find some type of new challenge or role that makes it more fun. Lots of opportunities for a rotation, new type of project, etc. PA isn’t easy but at end of day, industry has its own challenges too and so you have to do a realistic assessment of all the pros and cons. Do note that you can “ease off a bit” if you aren’t a partner yet still have a good well-paying career.

Managing Director not a bad gig if you have recurring revenue engagements. I'm having to bust it to make rev goals/pipeline to be considered for promotion. Our market is super tough right now. My best chance is to relocate to a larger office. But, once promoted, will have higher rev/pipeline goals. Not sure I have it in me to keep up the push. Seriously considering lower pay just to escape the race.

Is it more worth it to go into FDD at a regional firm now, or hope that my current big 4 will transfer me come spring 2021?

I'm kind of in the mindset of only doing FDD at big 4, otherwise I'll go straight to industry. Am I being too down on mid-market FDD experience and the related exit ops?

Also, I can't go the route of doing FDD at a different big 4. Already got rejected by all of them cause I'm not in audit (but have CPA).

I am getting a good project in current company where there will be lot of learning
Initially it will be manual and then it will have automation testing. At the same time I have an offer in another company with good package but there won't be much learning compared to the current company project I am yet to get locked. Is learning important and priority for 4.5 years of experience? Or better to go with the high package offer? (Other company offer is from TCS). Your valuable comments would help.
