1. Look up apartments on street easy and narrow down your choices.
2. Setup appointments with the broker or landlord or management company in the week you plan to be in the city
3. Visit the apartments
4. Make a decision and submit your offer.
I think a week in the city to visit the apartments should be enough for you to make a decision. No point in you moving your stuff and subleasing till your decision is made. You can save your money by waiting till the decision on the apartment is made.

Two weeks is probably an average time frame. Visit first before packing everything up and moving

It is much smarter to sublet and visit the apartments you’re considering once you’re already here. Even though it will cost you a lot more money, you need to visit the apartment you are considering multiple times and at different times of the day and night. For example you may visit for the first time during the day and find it is perfect but then you visit the block at night and discover that screaming drunks will be keeping you awake. Or you may find that the block is too dark and deserted at night and you don’t feel safe there. In order to do your due diligence on such a major decision as where you will be committing to live, you need to be physically close to the area so that you can scope out everything in and around The buildings you are considering before you commit

Agreed with others that you need to look at apartments in person. I went to look at Waterside Plaza which looked so nice in photos. In person it was a total bait n switch. The fridge and dishwasher are from 30 years ago. Toilet had rust. Window panes crumbling...
