That’s the only way you will get promoted.
No, it’s not frowned upon, but doing a great job may not be enough to get you promoted. You need to be able to justify the business value of the role being at the next level
Short story is I’m saving the company hundreds of 000’s doing consulting work outside of my role scope that we would otherwise have to hire out for
Just went through it myself. Had to advocate hard and demonstrate clearly:
1. That I was operating/delivering at the level above
2. That my job scope had expanded significantly from what was originally defined
3. That my responsibilities were at the level above (to meet this I had to work with my manager to move some responsibilities under me for the role at the next level)

Absolutely OK but do it the right way based on your company’s culture and processes.
