If the global chair of your practice group gives you a promise that you’ll be made partner next year (currently 6th year) - would you take it as granted? Who at the firm can oppose/delay that?

Verbal promises mean nothing

Depends on the partnership process at your firm. At my firm, only the partners in your practice group need to give the unanimous ok for a promotion to non equity partnership but equity partnership is a much more intense process.

like

Sounds promising but like with almost everything it depends on the firm. Is your practice important within the firm? Does the firm have a need for any new partners in that practice? The global head of M&A and the global head of idk FAA regulatory are two very different things.

Finance group. Not corporate dependent/support. There are quite a number of counsel above me.

That's great, but any number of things could happen to derail it, and depending on how it works at your firm, any number of people could say no. You need to keep asking the questions on process and metrics until you're in.

Thanks all. We had a meeting with a client. On our way back we talked about existing client relationships and he emphasized how I helped developing one with an important client. He then said that « this is being partner material, and everyone agrees. You’ll certainly be up for partnership next year. » - but as I said above, some folks in my group (and in the NY office, where am residing at) are much more senior (counsels, lateraled to the firm at equivalent seniority and were a couple years later promoted to counsel), and I believe more technical than me. So I don’t really know, I just want to be realistic and not be frustrated. That’s the first time it’s been clearly stated - every other times it was just complimenting my work/saying they’re happy with me/clients mentioning me to the partners. Am keeping my cool, trying to keep up the hard work, but as you can imagine that kind of things hits.

Sounds like you’re doing a great job. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t make partner next year, even if they put you up.

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Hi fishes,

This annual appraisal I have got a good % of appraisal increment on my salary but I was not promoted to a senior developer (although I have been mentoring a junior dev in my team and been part of building the project by implementing new technologies and tweaks) and my total YoE is 3.5+ years. What could be the reasons? What should I do now?

Thanks in advance!!

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Any corp associates looking to move from biglaw to a boutique? My firm remains busy and is looking to bring on a couple associates. We’re all either hybrid or fully remote, and that’s here to stay. 1500 billables and we’re serious about it. Work is primarily ECVC, Outside GC, M&A. Pay is roughly 30% biglaw haircut, with incentive bonuses for hours and originations.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart
