Is it easy to switch from niche litigation like ip to something broader?

Generally, litigation is litigation. I think it’s easier to go from a niche to a general lit practice than the other way around as a mid- to senior-level.

like

To a point, yes. As you get more senior you’d obviously be competing with people who have experience that may more closely match what any given firm’s general litigation group does. For example, lots of the general lit associates at my firm in my office do a bunch of securities litigation, so they’re still somewhat specialized by the time they’re senior associates even though the group isn’t. They’d probably have an easier time going to a general lit group that does a bunch of securities work than I would. But it’s doable for sure as long as the something broader is more litigation, especially as a midlevel lateral. I do also know some very senior IP litigators who have gone in house to companies that have in-house litigators, and they have broader roles there.

Mainly wonder if IB is a must have box to check, or if you can work your way up the ladder without.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)
