Currently going to school for my cannabis certification but I rarely see any jobs that offer cannabis research. I’ve spent 4 years in Big 4, with about half that time in FDD. I feel like Corp Dev is what I ultimately want, but am wondering if a stint in banking could be worth it. If I’m not interested in PE or other buyside alternatives, is the pit stop in IB worth it?
Mainly wonder if IB is a must have box to check, or if you can work your way up the ladder without.

I’ve never worked at a firm, only public interest and have no idea how to do billable hours.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. Restructuring/Bankruptcy associates, how slow have you been this year so far? Seems like industry wide it’s been a very quiet year.

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Anyone else super unimpressed with administrative support with a new firm after lateraling? I told a partner I’d just take care of a routine task myself. He told me my rate is too high and to use a “project manager” (basically an intern they can pay less than a paralegal). We have a 40 person group and 3 project managers making starvation wages. Big firm. You’d know the name.

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.
