How do you manage competing interests during a singing or closing? I’m working on a closing scheduled for this week (obviously everything needs to be done asap) and while I’ve told folks on my other deals that this closing is very busy, I’ve gotten really snarky responses and have been told that I’m taking too long to respond to stuff that (in my opinion) is not urgent on these other deals. Everyone seems to think that their task is more important than an actual closing. Advice?

Often the answer is it all has to get done, and if a bunch is hitting at once it's just tough but you fight through. But you're right, "i have to focus on X today" doesnt really play unless the teams overlap. As a junior i got tons of bad advice like "ask the partners to agree on a prioritization" (insane) or "set firm boundaries" (hahaha) but the reality is it sometimes is just very tough. I joke i earn about 50% of my salarie in the worst 10% of weeks.

Yep. It sucks but yep!

Wow, some of these responses are dumb. Do the best you can because it’s all that can be asked of you.

like

Tell people you’re on it and turn the work when you can. The partners that get it, get it and the ones that don’t, you turn down work from them when you’re above capacity in the future

like

Honestly just be responsive. Like make it clear that you’re underwater or on calls all day but will handle things as you can. And work your butt off. Oftentimes you don’t know what’s urgent and what’s not, but someone senior to you does.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.
