I’m 58 and still working. You’re good!
55 and no plans on going anywhere!
Full time freelance for 10 years now and I just turned 50. I also support my family of 5 on my single income. Being older is where the better gigs are- and you don’t have to deal with petty agency bullshit.
I'm 52 and been freelancing for the past 18 months. Everyone loves the work my partner and I do, but it's hard to find work that lasts more than a few weeks (and I probably don't book more than 5 months a year). If you guys can DM me any agencies that you know bring in a lot of freelancer teams I'd sure appreciate it. We do consumer, and healthcare (mostly conceptual DTC and some HCP)
It’s “Over 40 in Advertising,” not “In your 40’s in Advertising.” This is one place you won’t get pushed out for being 50.
Total lie. While some people over 50 make it in advertising, most are pushed out. Look around at any agency, large or small, and count the number of people over 30. Don’t care what anyone says, this is the truth. Agencies want people they can for half of your salary.
Freelance actually values older more experienced people. We make it feel easy and painless.
That’s the beauty of it too 😜
The best freelance AD I’ve hired regularly is over 50. Same goes for the copywriter, who puts my writing to shame 90% of the time.
59 in January. No Botox. Just had a great year freelancing. I’ve been freelancing almost my entire career so it’s not an age thing either. Yes, it’s pharma now, but who cares. I’m just banking for retirement, amazed they still hire me, and happy to keep going till they stop.
But seriously. I’ve prolonged my career past 50 and into my 60s by switching from general into healthcare.
Any pointers? Companies I should be looking into?
Going to be 49 & don’t give a shit. No ones business how old (or not) I am (or look/don’t look). I do the best job I can & work hard - not to remain relevant but ahead of the curve. Stay positive.
I’m also 49....🙌.
Just hit 48. This is rough.
I had a late start in the business. Tried to pick places where I could get more work-life balance so I could have time for my family. Never made a big salary or climbed the corporate ladder. Not easy my dude.
40 here and just made my first botox appointment 😶
Stop it. 😂
Congratulations! You can now start saying you’re “nearly 50” or “close to 50” for the next 4 years
The fashion pendulum swings back and forth. Wait it out and chucks will be back in style. Last winter all the millennium women were wearing olive green military type coats, which is exactly what I wore in high school 30 years ago. I still have it and considered wearing it to work once or twice.
You’ll be booked all year—and turning down work—if you don’t go in as a CD. Agencies have those. They need worker bees.
CD 1, you're telling me you pore over the graduation/employment dates and actually do the math? By the time you realize he's 50+ you've already booked him or are interviewing which is further than he would have gotten otherwise.
59, just started a new gig. You got this!
What everyone here has to realize is we have a lot of skills the young ones don’t have. They don’t know physical DM, print, creative strategy and best of all they are for the most part, horrible presenters. Rely on your skills in these areas plus add digital knowledge in BTL work and you will never be out of work for long. Gotten laid off twice in past two years but freelanced immediately with FT offers at every single place I freelanced. Only reason I’m taking my latest offer is cuz I have kids in college. Once they are out, it’s freelance life or starting my own shop. Do not teach them your tricks otherwise you are putting yourself out of a job. Br collaborative but not a live version of a YouTube tutorial.
We work in a business that treats us as if this was a sports franchise.
Go client side and bring your experience to an in-house agency and manage AOR.
The holy grail. 👍🏾
Just entered my 40’s. I’ve considered going client side before 50 because I know lots of older established creatives that are far more valued in that setting. It could all be a lie though. For now I’ll just keep gunning for that ECD to CCO dream.
Oh. I’m 59. Should I be in another bowl??!!
Who has to know your age?
