....that's not normal. It's called "salary range" for a reason - it refers to salary and salary alone. Or at least it should. This is very weird.

That was my understanding too. When I saw the base come in under the posted range, it caught me off guard. I always assumed the range referred to base pay, with benefits discussed separately as part of the total comp conversation.
Have you ever seen companies justify this by framing it as “total compensation,” or is this more likely just a case of poor transparency in the posting?

I would absolutely challenge that. Save the JD and show them what was in there. Hold them to it. This is why there are laws around salary transparency.

At the same time, I’m trying to figure out whether this is a compliance issue or just a compensation philosophy difference around “total comp.” In your experience, have you seen companies successfully defend this approach when candidates push back on it?
Wow, I have never heard of that before. I really hope that isn't something new. I don't think a range should include the benefits package.

That was my reaction too. If benefits are bundled into the range without clearly stating it upfront, it can create a very different expectation for candidates walking into the process. Most people read a salary range as base pay and then evaluate benefits separately. Do you think this might start becoming more common as companies try to frame offers around total compensation, or do you think candidates would push back on that pretty quickly?
They should be transparent and list it as a "total rewards package." Some companies can be shady, and they believe that will make a difference. People expect that these other things will be ON TOP of the posted salary. Definitely a bait-and-switch red flag.
I’ve never heard of that. Can you still see range posted to see if they disclosed that?

I have seen the "total compensation package" used a lot more, lately. I try to get confirmation on the screening call (with recruiter not hiring manager) so I don't waste time pursing something that might not be a fit.
This seemingly bait and switch is a red flag. Are they even bothering to look into it/take responsibility? If not, maybe take the job for now, but keep looking at the same time. Because, if they start off that way, who knows what other shenanigans lie ahead. As they say people (in this case, companies) show you exactly who they are, we just don't pay attention.
