I’m a (good) junior in biglaw - had great reviews before leave and partners would staff me repeatedly. Returned from leave earlier in the year and has been billing nothing because there’s no work. I have spoken to everyone I know and even sent emails to people in other offices that I had worked with before asking for work and they all say they’ll keep me in mind. I also think everyone is slow so they really don’t have anything but should I be worried? What more should I do? Or enjoy?

Just continue what you’re doing and be both available and like-able. It sounds like you have a long runway before you need to be concerned.

This recently happened to me and I really feel for you because it was horrid! I was back from leave, paying for childcare, and had nothing to do! However, I think there are two things to keep in mind:

1) how long have you been back from leave? I took maternity leave last year and when I came back, despite it being the “busy” season, it took approximately 3-4 weeks for my workload to pick back up. I think I billed 5 hours over the course of 3 weeks and it was brutal. Sometimes it takes time to get reintegrated into a team!

2) I think the last 3-4 months have been slow for many attorneys. I know that at my firm people have been struggling to stay busy, so it’s possible that there really isn’t much to staff you on now.

I suggest that you keep reminding people of your availability and try to get some “nonbillable” stuff off your plate- i.e., catch up on your CLEs, complete any admin tasks that you’ve been putting off (email filing, cleaning your office, etc.), or do some pro bono work. It sucks and I feel for you but try to hang in there!

Thanks. That’s helpful. I actually got everything squared away, have a nanny, got everything set up, brushed up on agreements and caught up on all CLE anticipating to be fully slammed and then have nothing to do, lol. I’m more worried abt experience/know how than hours since I’m a junior but will keep trying. Seeing others experience is helpful.

Additional info: Leave was for maternity/childbirth

Agree with Att1. It sounds like it’s just slow overall so it’s not about you. If you’re worried about hours, now’s a good time to take on a pro bono matter!

LEAVE. A. PAPER. TRAIL. Send emails daily. Save the emails. Then you have proof at EOY that you tried getting work and reached out incessantly. And then relax.

I will comment as a legal assistant .
I have another vocation as a medical lab technologist, before I became interested in law.
I am a mother of three children. They were all born after I was 30 yr, because I felt I had to finish my degrees and have a career first. A lot depends upon your age when you decide to become a mother. It will be more difficult the closer you are to 40. There is an increasing chance of birth defects such as Down Syndrome as you age.
If you have completed your bachelors and law degree, I wouldn’t advise waiting any longer at all.
