My attention to detail, on a scale of 1 to 10, has to be a 3. I can't find the fix. What would you rate your attention to detail? And if you started out bad, how did you fix it?

I started out bad. The way to fix it is to reconcile the big items, the totals first. Ensure the totals agree. That is what the reviewer will check first. Then, within the list, ensure the highest value items agree. Then spot check a few random amounts.

I’d say I’m a 10. However, I have a hard time dialing it back when “good” is good enough

Depends how swamped I am. If I'm only working 40-50 hours that week, probably an 8 or 9.

If I'm working 70+, maybe about a 3, possibly a 4.

Associate I started at a 2. Now I'm up to about a 7 as senior first year. It goes up as you progress. Also depends on how many hours straight I've been awake

Honestly like a 3. Not sure I ever improved. Probably why I dislike my job (or at the very least) projects that require me to have lot of attention to details. I’m much better at research/writing/controversy where I can have more freedom.

like

So PWC3 how long have you been with your firm? And do you have a reputation for that lack of detail?

like

I am a second year senior. I don’t think it’s affected my career, maybe it’s possible that I catch more than I think, but I feel confident there are details I miss sometimes on things I should have caught. I have never missed anything material/major, so I call that a win. To me, other details are just noise. So I’m not saying I can’t be detailed here or there, but I’m not naturally inclined to think that small and immaterial things are worth spending time reviewing. That’s probably bad. But I’m in tax and more on the non-numbers consulting side so maybe I lucked out?!? But even then sometimes I have to remind myself not to gloss over factual details that may actually end up being relevant. On the controversy side, I think I’m a bit better because you really are arguing the details so it helps me focus in on that.

But what I did do to try and improve in other aspects is what director 1 who responded above said. When I have to detail review numbers oriented stuff I just try to be methodical. Totals first, sort a lot if you can to make quick match ups easier or do = functions for large lists, etc. Do as few manipulations as possible to minimize human errors. I use alteryx now if I can, and use auto highlighting functions to call out larger items for specific review. I also if we are modeling or something similar, I have the associate make a summary for me, because it helps stuff jump out at me immediately if something doesn’t seem right. If I do the summary, it’s harder for me to tell because I’m reviewing the model and in the weeds on the summary as well.

And a word of encouragement, I’m not sure your specific job, but more experience absolutely helps. Part of it is knowing what to look for, and another part is that someone else is responsible for being in the weeds, freeing you up to see things at a higher level where it’s sometimes easier to catch stuff.

I’ve been running a sleep deficit since New Year. Doesn’t look like it will stop anytime soon.

Only think I know is to use adderall to boost efficiency. Problem is, how long can you live on 3-4 hours of sleep. Just hang in there. Things will get better one day. And if they don’t, leave.

1. That's what staff and managers are for.

like

On anything planning related 0/10, boring work papers 3/10, stuff I like, like valuations or other complex areas, 10/10. Have a real problem pretending to GAF.

like

probably a 5. More sleep and eating better would probably make me a 7/10. Can’t say the last time I’ve been that focused.

If you're in first few years I wouldn't worry a lot about it. The fact you are self aware and concerned it a good thing. In your early years it isn't so much attention to detail issues but the fact the you don't always know what you are looking at and are doing your best to just grasp the basics. It will smooth out for you eventually.

A solid 6 on a good day. I feel you OP

Now, probably a 9. As a staff/senior 1, a 3 or a 4. I had a manager back then who was all over me all the time about little details that I was missing and I eventually became super neurotic about it. Now, not much gets by me. It just takes practice and focus.

I am from Deloitte USI, Pune. Can anyone let me know whether Deloitte USI has a professional Cricket team/Club? Would love to be a part of it. I have represented state team (U-19) and national team as well :) Do we have various tournaments too where we can play with other Company teams?
If we don't have any club, then we should create one. I can volunteer in preparing one.
Its good to see that Deloitte focuses a lot on Well-being. So, we can write to higher authorities to have a club!!

Does anyone have a similar experience? I interviewed with recruiters from two of "Big 4". Both interviews went well, and I was told the recruiters will submit my resume to the partners and senior managers for the next interviews. 3 weeks later, I received the rejection letters without the next interview. I wonder why the partners even not bothered to interview me. If it matters, I am a CPA with 3 years non-PA experience and applied for experienced associate positions. I appreciate any insights.
