You should not intentionally go into insurance defense.
This is accurate advice. You will regret making your career much harder than it needs to be
Do not do insurance defense. It is a mistake. Even if that’s your first offer - decline it. You can easily get stuck because many firms won’t hire ID attorneys for commercial litigation roles - firm I used to be at wouldn’t even consider an ID lateral unless it was to their insurance team. ID underpays substantially and overworks incredibly due to the fact that insurance companies pay low rates. As a result it’s low rate, high volume, low pay work that is often unsophisticated.
It won’t make you marketable for commercial lit roles and don’t listen to anyone who raves about being able to do depositions and the like as a junior - most bigger/full service firms don’t care about juniors having those skills and it won’t make you more marketable.
I don’t think you’ll have a problem doing non-ID work at a firm that also has ID. Even if you do some ID. But doing ID as your main practice area is a career limiter. And if you can’t tell by these comments, other attorneys will perceive your practice as less prestigious or desirable. And that’s both because of the perceived lack of sophistication in the work as well as the fact that it’s understood that ID attorneys work very high hours for very low pay on average.
Please listen to the above comments.
Worked at an insurance defense firm, even though I didn't do insurance defense myself. It limits you, careerwise.
