If you can learn how to write on your own, you already have the design skills to comp your spec work.
I have no idea what’s going to happen with AI, but you can start to learn copywriting by reading “Hey Whipple Squeeze This,” and “Junior: Writing Your Way Ahead in Advertising.”
I know firsthand that Book180 is very generous with scholarships and accommodations. I would reach out to Francesca and Sarah directly if you are even considering it somewhat, or feel free to send me a direct chat. I made the switch from Art Direction to Copywriting and only took one seminar at Book180, which was enough to pull credentials my way.
Also A.I. is a tool, much like Photoshop before it, and pencil and paper before that. Use it if you must, but do not kid yourself into thinking a piece of technology can replace the human experience.
Free and cheap resources are out there. Look at thousands of classic good print headlines everyday. There’s a guy posting on LinkedIn every day. Then you can buy old annuals of award winning work from years prior. Etc. DM if you want more cost saving tips.

Who is the guy on LI? I’d like to follow him.
I’m an art director who writes. Depending on the agency/client/partner it’s a plus.
I believe you but I am looking to be totally out of art direction.
Part of it is because I love writing and concepting. I’m writing a book right now. The other part is realizing that no one is coming to save or relieve art directors. The demands are too great and the rewards are nonexistent. I have to save myself by pivoting.
I'm glad I discovered this four years in. If I knew then what I know now, I NEVER would’ve chosen art direction as a career. Never. It would’ve saved me a lot of burnout, stress, headaches and weekends.
sounds like you have the concerns of all of us creatives have about the future. the real question to be asking yourself is if it’s worth the burn out you’ve already experienced.
