So you don’t listen to recruiters, period. You tell them what you need. You don’t tell them the salary, you tell them to reveal the firm or you can’t work with them. They will so over the phone. If you like the firm, then you tell them to submit it, but only submit to places you confirm in writing. When they say what salary you want, you say it’s flexible, let’s see what they offer. If the recruiter refuses despite that. Find a new one. I’ve used many recruiters over my life, the best ones just are straight up about the firm and the expected salary And don’t care if you tell them your salary all not. If they can’t tell you the salary range, move on. Once offer is given, negotiate it. If recruiter says they won’t accept it, tell them to ask anyway. Rinse and repeat.
Most recruiters lie to you, sadly and give bad names to the good ones. Good ones will tell you who actually has connections at your target firms and can name partners they can reach out to as well. Alternatively, they will tell you if they don’t have connections there and will go through standard recruiting for you. In that case, they should call that firm and have a chat to sell your skill and see if they bite.
Good luck!
You should take more control on the process, and don’t go to interviews without confirming it passes your minimum threshold
Well the whole point of a recruiter is to let go of some of that control. I should be able to depend on them to AT LEAST consider two non negotiables, and not ignore them when being submitted to firms. The only way-I can see-to take more control, is just not use a recruiter.
Why would you apply to a firm that didn’t have your desired practice area? Do you even know what job listing you applied to when your application was submitted? This sounds like your fault.
MASSIVE RED FLAG that she applied to firms for you without you even knowing the firms’ names. Can you please name the recruiter so other people don’t have to deal with this?
You need to get a list of all submissions from here asap and immediately talk to another, reputable recruiter to see how this mess can be cleaned up.
I don't just rely on recruiters. I cast a wide net when applying to new roles to see what fits.
You have been extremely helpful on this thread AA1.
