I was getting so insanely bored and was therefore engaging less. This is what some people call “burn out from boredom.” I didn’t hesitant to change areas, it was changing firms that was hard to decide to do. I don’t miss and I don’t regret my decision.
I went from first party property insurance litigation to commercial litigation. I was bored af in insurance.
A new area of law started coming in, I started doing it, everyone from other sections kept bringing me on their work related to that new thing, eventually we had multiple FTEs worth of work for the new thing so it became it's own independent practice area. Voila, I was in a new practice area. I almost shifted even further but some family issues led me to step back from further switching

BigLaw practice for over a decade has always seemed like a combination of games, and, in the situation(s) you describe, THE GAME IS FROGGER. To be successful, you must always keep an eye not just on your performance but also on the health of your practice group and the health of the firm, financially and culturally. My 1st practice group as a 1st yr collapsed 2 weeks before my start date. I was grateful to be picked for the firm's wealthiest practice group, where I found myself having to take 6 hrs of grad level chemistry a week -- and the managing partner was a raging alcoholic. Leapt are the end of 2L year to a more prestigious BigLaw firm and went through the same thing! To survive and to thrive (success in how YOU feel), in addition to staying plugged into the Firm, REACH OUT to partners in other groups or offices if you'd like to learn more about that practice. Let your managing partner know that you'd like to expand your knowledge base. From there, you will build your expertise, even find your niche if you want it. Good luck!
