As a white man, i hope when I go up for a job promotion Im only competing against other white men. Otherwise women and minorities have been hired over me with far less credentials. It doesn’t feel fair but I dont complain about it because I know my company needs more of them and there aren’t many that are qualified and that tend to apply to the roles I am looking for. Ive seen this play out time and time again with myself in others over the past 20 years.
How do you know their credentials were far less? Maybe they just performed better than you in the interview assessments?
In work, just what FI1 said, but I think in big companies it is less the higher you go... but I have not worked in a big company so I can't really comment too much on that.
The bigger issue is the current messaging in the media and social media in particular. Terms like "Toxic Masculinity" being applied to average male traits rather than extreme cases. The dad is always a Homer Simpson like clown in TV shows too. It is funny, but it is always the same formula.
Also, if a man and a woman get arrested for the same charge the man will get a harsher sentence, and is less likely to get a warning for minor infractions.
Men have almost no chance at primary custody in a divorce, no matter how bad the mom is.
Men are not allowed to show emotions. If they get angry they are dangerous, and if they show sadness they are weak.
Finally, schools are slanted towards girls because most teachers are women and teach the way girls tend to learn. Boys are naturally more active, so sitting long periods in school is harder. Studies show that boys get more attention in school, but less guidance and nurturing in those interactions. Over time that compounds and leads to fewer boys going to college.
BOA all of life has more nuance than can be explained on this forum.
More women choose teaching because women are naturally more nurturing. Most male teachers go into subjects they love, like gym, social studies, and math.
The "gender pay gap" is mostly because women choose lower paying careers like teaching or nursing.
I have 4 daughters and we tried to push them in certain directions, but we ended up with a nurse, a radiology tech, an animal lover trying to get into zookeeping, and one TBD, but is thinking engineering. We could not override their wiring.
I love them all and am proud of the women they are becoming and the lives they are building. All I want is for them to be happy, and they are doing that. But only one is even considering a make dominated field.
I do the cooking and my wife is a cop, so we are far from a classic example of norms, and yet our girls are falling in line with the averages.
As a male with 4 daughters i can tell you their activity level was never stifeled, and was WAY below mine at their ages. Having been a teacher for almost 2 decades before changing careers, boys are born more active.
Go to the caves and winemaker and women started in one place gathering and being social while men went out in search of game. The traits required for each role can be seen in modern tendencies. We need each other but are inherently different.
“Reverse discrimination” is such a red pill bs term. It’s a term so white men can have a pity party without acknowledging the extreme advantage they are give in our society. Discrimination is discrimination. If you feel discriminated against as a white man, just say that. Let’s not give it your own special fancy separate “white men only” term.
On this topic about how American Men define themselves and see themselves through the eyes of others, read American Men written by Jordan Cann. We can not ignore that every person has differing skills- some of those skills may be more prominent in one classification of talent but that isn’t to say that there are any absolutes and talent should be hired based on skills not any other category- even if due to innate skills this appears to be slated to one classification as opposed to others.
