I literally gave this advice to my wife’s cousin last week - she landed in a PMM role by accident and is about to interview for a PM role and didn’t know how to present herself (I’ve spent the majority of my career in PM or PMM roles - or a hybrid of the two):
I’ve had a ton of “portfolios” put in front of me. Collections of materials that went with product launches or campaigns and had it explained to me what each item was and why it was needed. But the ones that stood out were the ones that actually explained the process behind them - who the target customer was, the needs that were being addressed by the product/campaign, and then how the materials communicated this need. The materials show me how the customer was spoken to, but without the what and the why, it’s just a bunch of stuff for which I am unlikely to be the target customer.
You already have pm experience…? You shouldn’t need to build a portfolio if you already have the experience and therefore can show the projects you worked on.
Good luck on your job hunt
