After being downsized in 2007 during that big recession, bubble burst, whatever it was called, I went back to school part time for nursing. I was 53. By the time I graduated I was 60! Yes, I was ALWAYS the oldest, and it bothered me at the beginning, in school, but no one ever treated me differently or said anything other than shock at my age because I do look 10-15 years younger lol. Once I graduated and started working, the only problem I had was people thinking I was a “seasoned” nurse when in fact I was a “trainee”. Still, I feel I had a good rapport with all the younger staff members. I worked nights so yeah, we did go out day drinking a few times and did some night time outings as well. I never felt they were judging me because of my age. I also feel that my kids, who were in their 40s, kept me young. They kept me up to date about…everything lol. I know, corny, but true. I believe age is a state of mind. Did you, like me, get a late start? Don’t judge yourself. Be proud of your accomplishments.

Yes, my manager is 10 years younger than me and a number of my coworkers are even younger. I have had to think hard about why I was judging myself. For me, it was thinking I should be “further” in my career than I am but honestly that isn’t something I want anyway.
I am trying to work in a field that is youth seeking. No one is looking for a 40 year old when you they feel 2 20 years old can do it better.
