I’m planning to clerk for a DJ in 2026 but I’m currently interviewing for firm jobs. Should I disclose to the firms that I’ll be clerking in a year? It’s the right thing to do but I’m not sure firms will want to have me around for just a year.

Was in a similar position and did t say anything. I got the sense that the firm wasn’t crazy about it when I told them but by that point I realized that I didn’t want to return. May be in this position again with a COA clerkship and plan on giving the new firm 2 months notice

like

If you don’t want to return, have a good relationship, are less than a year out, and already received your bonus, I would tell them.

That’s what I did.

If you are not fully committed to them, they will be uncomfortable at the thought of losing you.

But aside from that, the benefit is that they will wind down your work, making your life very cushy in the process.

However, if you don’t like them, don’t care about returning AT ALL, and want to keep your cases for as long as possible, I’d give them a month’s notice - maybe 2 weeks (but that’d be a major F U to them).

Had an associate of mine recently confront me and say he has a crush on me. Told him nope and that would be very unprofessional. I’m growing concerned he is holding something against me.

Anyone else kind of bored clerking? I liked law school and thought I liked research and writing, but so far this district court clerkship has been pretty boring—lots of state law issues that are poorly briefed. Though to be fair, most of my time has been spent on one big case that I’m 99% sure is going to settle but not until the eve of trial bc that’s plaintiff’s counsel’s m.o.; so my work resolving the insane number of SJ and Daubert motions seems like a waste of my time.

Ive been practicing in TX for 2-3 years at a big law firm doing mostly bankruptcy work (and some trial) and looking to clerk at a bankruptcy court in SDNY/DDE/EDVA (I am well aware of how great the SDTX judges are but I am set on leaving Texas). Anyone familiar with how many apps these judges normally get or what makes candidates stand out? Are these judges generally not interested in someone who has practiced in a different market?

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.
