Thoughts on the length of notice to give your judge that you’re leaving? Pertinent facts: I’ve been there a few years as the second clerk, and they would still have their head clerk and third clerk.

Probably in this context I would give as much notice as possible. You do a clerkship in large part for the relationship with the judge.

Did you ever figure this out? I don’t have an end date for my clerkship, and I’ve been with the court five years and my current judge one year, but he is SO TOXIC I’ve had to start therapy. And he has a history of firing clerks without notice so I’m trying to get out ASAP. I think I’ll probably only give two weeks honestly.

When does the term end? I.e. when’s the next break in the calendar?

No real break in the calendar. We hear cases year round (work for a state court, not in the federal system). So it truly is just a steady stream. As soon as I finish one case another two or three come in.

What would you think a remote employee should be making with 5 years of experience.

Is anyone expecting clerkship bonuses to be a bit higher within the next year considering the current hot market for laterals and mass exodus from big law? Or will things die down and keep clerkship bonuses at about the same level?

Are there any chill circuit court clerkships? Some attorneys have told me to use my two years of clerkship as professional experience to not start at a law firm as entry level and this makes sense if I go into litigation, but I’m wondering if I can use my clerkships as leverage for corporate too. Any thoughts?

Hello everyone! I am a Judicial Law Clerk, which I have been for a little over two years now. However, I’m planning on moving into the AML/Compliance realm. I have a background in finance, having been a Finance Disbursing Officer in the Army for 6 years with one deployment in that role. Additionally, I am currently a JAG attorney and studying for my CAMS, hoping to take that exam in the next month or two. Any advice or referrals for anyone I can talk to learn more about the field? Thanks! :)

The question is, is graduation from law school, not minimum competency? With this line of reasoning we are saying that law schools do not produce competent future lawyers, so should we instead switch to a system of taking the bar without the three years of a measure that frankly bar associations have deemed not an adequate measure? Dash this comment aside if it is fallible, but there is something here that has been overlooked. Competence is not regurgitation and memorization.

Anyone else kind of bored clerking? I liked law school and thought I liked research and writing, but so far this district court clerkship has been pretty boring—lots of state law issues that are poorly briefed. Though to be fair, most of my time has been spent on one big case that I’m 99% sure is going to settle but not until the eve of trial bc that’s plaintiff’s counsel’s m.o.; so my work resolving the insane number of SJ and Daubert motions seems like a waste of my time.

Question for career/long-term clerks. Do your courts have parental leave policies? Mine doesn’t have a policy. Curious what others have or don’t have. This is not including FMLA. I mean something separate from that.

Anyone feel way over their head when they started clerking (district level, but fine with hearing appellate perspective as I’ve got one of those locked down later)? I did not feel this way when I started big law.
