9/9:30-6, but I could get away with less. Usually will work late (till 8) the week before the 6 month list is due.
Pretty much the same as A1. Truly feels like a 9-5 and I also take an hour lunch everyday.
Mine has been pretty consistent 8:30-4. Longer days for trials and when we get motions for emergency injunctions. Muchhhh less this summer since we aren’t busy, like 8:30-2. This is because of who my judge is as a boss. Some other judges make their clerks work full day hours even when nothing is happening. Some work weekends even when there’s not an emergency, which is very weird I think. Some judges are night owls and their clerks don’t come in until 10 or 11 then stay very late. All based on what the judge wants.
Consistently 8:30-5pm and I never touch work outside of those hours. It’s the best job.
Your mileage will vary. I clerked during the beginning of the COVID pandemic so most of my clerkship was spent working remotely (and I know many current careers clerks who remain nearly 100% remote). I would say that my experience was that it was a 9-5 with an hour lunch, but your mileage will vary depending on how your chambers is run.
For example, if your judge pulls late nights or gets in very early then you may feel compelled to stick around etc.
100% agree about the judge. I had two different federal district court clerkships. My first judge was senior status and a night owl, so I was usually 9ish - 6. He’d get in around 10.
My second judge was a morning bird. He generally wanted us there around 730/740 and he’d be doing morning meeting by 8 and on the bench by 830. But he was usually out by a little after 5.
I’m in bankruptcy so take my word with a grain of salt because it’s been slow the majority of my term, but my work day is usually 8-5 with a long lunch. Some days are 8-6 and most Fridays I’m gone by 4, but it’s a standard work day for the most part.
My judge expects us to be in chambers at least from 9:00 to 6:00, but we are typically there from about 9:00 to 7:00 and then do a bit more work from home around 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM. We also typically work an extra 4 to 6 hours on weekends.
very similar experience/hours with my district court judge
9-3 at the state appellate level. But my judge is otherwise the devil incarnate
During my district court clerkship, my hours were generally 7:30-5. During my circuit clerkship, they were typically 9-5. But I also worked for two very chill judges.
District clerk here. My hours are generally 9-5, but sometimes vary depending on motions, trials, etc.
senior judge. I could work 8-8 but I am able to work 9-5 with a few extra hours on the weekend.
Senior district court judge. 10-6, no late evenings/weekends. 8:30-7:30/8 during trial
9-5 fed district; 9-6 state supreme court. No weekends
