I’m ready to ask my boss for a meeting about compensation. My duties have multiplied beyond those stated in my offer letter, and I want a commensurate raise. Please help me figure out what to say. What data should I present? Should I make a deck to walk her through, or should I just make some notes and have a face to face conversation? I’m so nervous, but I know I’m underpaid. Please help! I would definitely make a concrete list of all of the responsibilities, duties, and metrics you are responsible for that were not part of your job description when you were hired. Show the discrepancy in black-and-white terms.

I would make a list of what your offer letter duties included and what you have taken on since then. Quantify and include metrics, achievements, and any other milestones you’ve reached. As far as deck or face-to-face, that depends on what you’d like to do, your manager, and which one is better for what you’ll be talking about. Good luck, it’s not an easy conversation, but one that probably a lot of us should be having.

Is it unreasonable for me to ask my husband to leave his job (or request unpaid time off) to take care of our children?
